The singer of “E Depois do Adeus” (And After the Goodbye), the song that won the 1974 Festival da Canção (Song Festival) and that Emissores Associados de Lisboa broadcast at 22:55 on 24 April as the MFA’s first signal.

He was born in Lisbon in 1947.4 On 7 March 1974 he won the Festival da Canção (Song Festival) with “E Depois do Adeus” (And After the Goodbye), by José Niza.12

The Armed Forces Movement chose the song as the first signal of the revolution: it was a romantic ballad, with no political content, that would arouse no suspicion.1 At 22:55 on 24 April, the announcer João Paulo Diniz introduced it on air at Emissores Associados de Lisboa. It was the signal for the units joining the Movement to begin preparing to leave their barracks.13
