Sources and method

This app follows a simple rule: nothing is stated without a source, and when the sources do not confirm something, we say so.

The rules

  • Every place, person, date and walk lists its sources; the most important statements carry a numbered note that leads to the source.
  • Primary and institutional sources come first: museums (Museu do Aljube, Museu Nacional Resistência e Liberdade), archives (Torre do Tombo, Centro de Documentação 25 de Abril, Casa Comum), the Assembleia da República (the Portuguese parliament), the Diário da República (the official gazette). Wikipedia is a starting point, never an end point.
  • A date only includes the day if the source gives it. “May 1947” stays “May 1947”.
  • When two sources disagree — a time, a number, an address — we choose the one closest to the events and record the discrepancy in To be confirmed.
  • The texts are written afresh from the sources; short quotations go in quotation marks, with their author.
  • About living people, only documented facts from public life. Never current addresses.
  • The coordinates state their precision: the door, the building, or only the street (a demolished building, an address the sources do not give down to the number).
