Accessibility
This app aims to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), as Portuguese Decree-Law No. 83/2018 requires of public websites — even though it does not belong to a public body.
Compliance status
Partially compliant. What we know is still missing is set out below.
What is already in place
- Semantic HTML: headings in order, lists, real buttons and links; the page language is en-GB.
- A “Skip to content” link at the start of every page.
- Contrast of at least 4.5:1 for all text, in both the light and the dark theme (measured).
- Focus always visible (3 px outline), and touch targets of at least 44 px.
- Colour is never the only signal: every theme has its name written out.
- The map is never the only way to see the content: everything on it also exists as a list. The points on the map are named buttons that can be reached with the keyboard.
- All images have alternative text; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
- It respects “reduce motion” and the system’s dark theme.
- Texts can be listened to aloud (the “Listen” button), in the phone’s own voice.
- Automated accessibility tests (axe) run on every change.
What is not yet compliant
- The map itself (the image of the streets) cannot be read by screen readers — the list of places is the alternative, and it is always on the same page.
- The walks go through streets with slopes, steps and cobbled pavements: each walk says what it involves, in the “Before you go” section, but there are not yet step-free alternatives for all of them.
- Not everything has been translated into English yet: text still awaiting translation is shown in Portuguese, with a notice, and marked as Portuguese so that screen readers switch pronunciation.
How this statement was prepared
Automated evaluation (axe-core, on every page template, in both themes) and manual testing with keyboard and screen reader. Statement reviewed on 2 October 2026.
