Leite de Vasconcelos

Culture and censorshipannouncer on the Rádio Renascença programme “Limite”

An announcer on “Limite”, he recorded, without knowing what it was for, the reading of the first verse of “Grândola, Vila Morena” that opened the MFA’s signal on Rádio Renascença at 00:20 on 25 April 1974.

He was one of the regular announcers on Limite, the independent programme broadcast by Rádio Renascença, and one of his routine tasks was recording the poems that the programme played every day.21

On 24 April 1974, his day off, Manuel Tomás called him in to “record poems”. He recorded a sequence of texts lasting about ten minutes, two of them written by Carlos Albino to be vetted by the censor, in which the reading of the first verse of “Grândola, Vila Morena” appeared linked to the other readings. He was not told what it was for.21

At 00:20 on 25 April, his recorded voice, reciting the verse, came before José Afonso’s song on Renascença: it was the second signal of the Armed Forces Movement, confirming that operations had begun.31 At the end of the broadcast, the censorship agent who was in the studios showed signs of having heard something he had not foreseen.1

They crossed paths with him

  • Carlos Albino

A journalist on República and one of the authors of “Limite”, he made sure that “Grândola, Vila Morena” was played on Rádio Renascença as the MFA’s signal, getting round both the station’s own censorship and the official one.

  • José Afonso (Zeca Afonso)

    1929–1987

A protest singer, persecuted by the censors and imprisoned by the PIDE/DGS in 1973. His “Grândola, Vila Morena” (Grândola, swarthy town), sung in chorus at the Coliseu in March 1974, was a month later the second signal of 25 April.

Notes on the sources2
  • Whether the announcer is the journalist and writer Teodomiro Leite de Vasconcelos (Arcos de Valdevez, 1944 – Maputo, 1997), as Wikipedia says; that is why no dates of birth and death are given here.
  • The same Wikipedia article has him as the live announcer that night; the 25 April Association says he was off duty, that his voice had been recorded the day before and that the announcer on duty was Paulo Coelho.
